More sustainable food consumption with flexible packaging

In a circular economy, resources are managed in cycles that are as closed as possible. The use of resources is implemented with recyclable materials, in which as little waste as possible is produced in the recycling process.

Proderma has recognised the signs of the times and offers solutions.
Anyone living in a single household, travelling a lot or occasionally shopping for themselves will be familiar with the fact that packaging is often too big for one person. This leads to food being thrown away. According to the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), 25 per cent of the environmental impact of Switzerland’s diet can be attributed to food waste (avoidable food losses). This corresponds to about half the environmental impact of motorised private transport in Switzerland.

Smaller packaging sizes can reduce food waste. Proderma has recognised this trend. “The future of packaging is flexible,” says Rudolf Zimmerli, Managing Director of the packaging specialist in Schötz, Lucerne. He is referring not only to the mobile and flexible use of packaging, but also to the savings in packaging material. For example, if you compare rigid packaging, such as a can or bottle, with a bag, the latter is more ecological in terms of material consumption. The lower use of resources, the reduced packaging volume and the lower weight contribute to a reduction in CO2 pollution. In addition to the ecological benefits, transport costs can also be saved.
